Train Driver Killed as Commuter Train Derails Near Barcelona Amid Severe Storms

A commuter train derailed and crashed near Barcelona on Tuesday evening, killing the driver and injuring at least 14 passengers, according to local media and officials.

The Rodalies train struck a retaining wall between Gelida and Sant SadurnĂ after the structure collapsed onto the tracks.

Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene and are still assessing the severity of the injuries sustained by passengers.

The accident occurred as heavy storms swept across north-eastern Spain, disrupting transport and prompting weather alerts in several regions.

Authorities have placed many coastal areas in eastern and north-western Spain on high alert due to dangerous conditions.

The severe weather has also brought snowstorms to the Spanish Pyrenees, while storms along the coast of Menorca have generated waves several metres high, causing further concern for travel and public safety.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the derailment.
