TWO DEAD AFTER LIGHT AIRCRAFT CRASHES IN ESSEX DURING 'FLIGHT EXPERIENCE'
ONGAR, ESSEX — A tragic aviation accident has claimed the lives of two people after a light aircraft crashed into a wheat field in High Ongar on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
The incident occurred during what was meant to be a brief, trial "flying experience" flight.
The Incident
According to Essex Police, the two-seat Cessna 152 aircraft took off from North Weald Airfield located roughly seven miles away at 12:22 PM local time. Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 indicates that the plane traveled east before turning back toward the airfield roughly five minutes into the flight. Tracking for the aircraft abruptly ended at 12:30 PM, at which point emergency services received multiple distress calls from members of the public who witnessed the aircraft go down in a field off Mill Lane.
The aircraft had successfully completed two flights earlier that morning, following five flights the previous day.
Casualties and Identification
Authorities confirmed on Wednesday that both individuals on board the plane died at the scene.
Detective Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, stated:
"The two-seat Cessna aircraft was carrying out a short flying experience flight but, sadly, it did not return... Sadly, we can now confirm that two people who were on board died."
Officials have noted that formal identification has not yet taken place. Due to the severe nature of the impact, police stated that the identification process is likely to be highly complex and will be handled with extreme sensitivity and compassion for the families involved.
Ongoing Investigations
A multidisciplinary team from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) including specialists in engineering, operations, and human factors has been deployed to the crash site to meticulously gather evidence.
The AAIB is conducting its safety investigation in parallel with forensic teams and detectives from Essex Police. Local partners, including the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, North Weald Airfield, and the Epping Forest District Council, are also assisting in building an accurate picture of the final moments of the flight. Authorities have emphasized that it is too early to speculate on the mechanical or environmental causes of the crash.
Community Response & Appeal
Police presence is expected to remain heavy along Mill Lane over the coming days as investigators secure the scene and ensure the area is completely safe for local residents and businesses.
Essex Police are actively appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the flight, saw the aircraft prior to the crash, or possesses relevant dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage to contact them immediately by calling 101 or submitting a report online.
In response to the tragedy, St Mary's Church in High Ongar issued a public message via social media, asking the local community to join them in praying for the victims, their families, and the emergency service personnel responding to the scene.
