Norway's Largest Residential Fire : Destroys Over 100 Homes, Hundreds Evacuated

Drammen, Norway | July 18, 2026

A devastating fire that swept through a residential neighbourhood in Drammen, approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Oslo, has become Norway's largest residential fire in modern history, destroying more than 100 homes and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents.

The blaze reportedly began on Friday afternoon in a townhouse before rapidly spreading to neighbouring homes and nearby woodland, fueled by strong winds. Thick black smoke covered large parts of the area as firefighters, assisted by helicopters, worked throughout the night to contain the flames.

Authorities confirmed that no fatalities or missing persons have been reported as of Saturday. More than 60 firefighters and emergency crews remain on the scene while investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.

Emergency Response

Police evacuated hundreds of residents as the fire spread through the neighbourhood. Emergency shelters were established for displaced families, while firefighting aircraft and ground crews battled both residential and forest fires caused by the rapidly expanding blaze.

Officials from Norway's Directorate for Civil Protection described the incident as the largest residential fire in the country's modern history.

Victims and Community Impact

While no deaths have been confirmed, many families have lost their homes and personal belongings. Authorities are continuing to assess property damage and provide emergency assistance to affected residents.

As of publication, official victim interviews have not been released. Some media outlets have quoted local witnesses describing the rapid spread of the fire and chaotic evacuations, but authorities have not published verified personal statements from victims.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials and police have not yet determined how the blaze started.

Residents have been urged to stay away from the affected area while emergency services continue containment and recovery operations.
