Finland Restricts Air and Maritime Traffic in Gulf of Finland

HELSINKI — The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) imposed temporary restrictions on air and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland early Tuesday morning as a precautionary measure against potential drone threats, authorities confirmed.
The airspace restrictions took effect at 5:26 a.m. local time, followed by maritime traffic restrictions at 5:40 a.m. The measures were lifted at 7:13 a.m.
Precautionary Measure for Civilian Safety
According to the Finnish Defence Forces, the restrictions were implemented as a precaution to protect civilians in the event that drones needed to be intercepted. The military emphasized that no drones ultimately entered Finnish airspace or territory during the incident.
"the restrictions were put in place as a precaution to protect civilians in the event of a drone interception," the FDF stated in an official announcement on social media platform X.
Repeated Restrictions in Recent Weeks
This marks the latest in a series of similar restrictions imposed in the eastern Gulf of Finland over recent weeks. Finnish authorities have repeatedly restricted air and maritime traffic in the area amid ongoing Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Russian territory.
Previous restrictions were implemented on July 18 and July 24, among other dates, following Ukrainian drone strikes on targets in and around St. Petersburg, including logistics centers belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries.
Heightened Regional Tensions
The restrictions come against a backdrop of escalating tensions along NATO’s eastern flank. Finland joined NATO in 2023, and security concerns have steadily increased since then.
Since late March, Finnish authorities have repeatedly detected drones over Finnish territory. Investigations determined that the drones were of Ukrainian origin, with at least three carrying unexploded ordnance.
The Finnish Coast Guard and Defence Forces are still expected to hold previously scheduled military exercises in the same area off the coast of the southeastern city of Kotka.
