Hundreds of Moped Riders Protested in Helsinki

Around 400 moped and motorcycle riders took part in a protest ride through Helsinki on Saturday. They were calling for legal moped gatherings and better cooperation between riders and the police.

The protest came after an incident in Tuusula on August 8, where a 15-year-old rider was forced off the road by a police car and suffered minor injuries. That case has led to two separate police investigations — one looking at the rider's actions and another looking at the conduct of the officers involved.

The demonstration started in Tattarisuo, in eastern Helsinki. Riders gathered there before driving in a convoy, with a police escort, towards Kansalaistori in the city centre. They arrived shortly after 4:20 PM and later continued to the Olympic Stadium, where the event ended around 5:25 PM.

Police said the protest went smoothly and there was good cooperation with the organisers.

The event was organised by Mopoilevat nuoret ry, a group that represents young moped riders. The group wants to improve relationships between young riders and the police, and to create legal places for moped meets in the Helsinki area.

Organisers told participants to follow traffic rules and avoid wheelies, loud revving, and other behaviour that could cause problems.

The group says that organised and approved moped gatherings would reduce conflicts and make things safer. They want Helsinki to follow the example of cities like Turku and Oulu, where young riders and authorities already work together to organise events.

The protest ended without any reported disturbances.
