Harvest Moon 2026: How and When to See This Year's Special Full Moon

Skywatchers across Europe and beyond are in for a treat this September as the famous Harvest Moon lights up the night sky. Here is everything you need to know about this year's event, including when to look up and how to get the best view.
When to See the Full Moon
The September full moon will reach its peak illumination on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The exact moment the moon is at its brightest is 16:49 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).
For viewers in Europe, here is when the full moon peaks in different time zones:
· United Kingdom (BST, UTC+1): 5:49 p.m. on September 26
· Central European Time (CEST, UTC+2): 6:49 p.m. on September 26 (this includes countries like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain)
For our readers in Finland, the full moon will occur at 7:49 p.m. Eastern European Summer Time (EEST) on September 26. Finland is in the UTC+3 time zone, so the moon will be perfectly illuminated just before 8 p.m. local time.
Why Is It Called the Harvest Moon?
September's full moon is traditionally called the Harvest Moon. It gets this name because it is the full moon that falls closest to the autumn equinox, which happens around September 22 each year.
In the past, this moon was very helpful to farmers. Around this time of year, the moon rises only a short time after sunset for several nights in a row. This meant that farmers had extra moonlight in the early evening to continue harvesting their crops. That is why it became known as the Harvest Moon.
How to Get the Best View
You do not need any special equipment to enjoy the Harvest Moon. It will be bright enough to see with just your eyes.
· Look East at Sunset: The full moon will rise in the east around the time the sun sets in the west. Find a spot with a clear view of the eastern horizon.
· The Best Time to Watch: For a truly memorable sight, try to catch the moon just as it is rising above the horizon. When the moon is low in the sky, it often appears larger than usual (this is called the "Moon Illusion") and can take on a beautiful orange or yellow color.
· When It Will Look Full: Even though the exact peak is on September 26, the moon will look nearly full and bright for a day or two before and after. So if the weather is cloudy on Saturday night, you can still enjoy a great view on Friday, September 25, or Sunday, September 27.
· What Else to Look For: The planet Saturn will also be visible in the sky around the time of the full moon, appearing as a bright, star-like object.
So mark your calendars for September 26, step outside after sunset, and enjoy the beautiful Harvest Moon of 2026!
