Finland to Introduce Green Licence Plates for Taxis from 2027

Finland is set to introduce green licence plates for taxis from next year as part of a series of new regulations aimed at improving passenger safety and strengthening oversight of the taxi sector.

Under the new system, taxis will be identified by licence plates with a green background and black registration numbers. The requirement will apply to all taxis, including vehicles operating through ride-hailing platforms.

The new licence plates are scheduled to be introduced on 1 January 2027, followed by a six-month transition period. From 1 July 2027, all taxis will be required to use the green plates.

Taxis will also have to display a taxi sign on the roof, making them easier for passengers to identify.

Another major change concerns taximeters. From February 2027, taximeters will become mandatory in all vehicles used for taxi transport.

Tighter rules for taxi drivers

Regulation of the taxi sector has already been tightened this month. Since 1 September, taxi drivers have been required to provide passengers with clear information about the fare before a journey begins.

Authorities have also introduced closer scrutiny of taxi drivers’ criminal backgrounds, with the aim of improving passenger safety.

Finland liberalised its taxi market in 2018. Since then, however, the sector has faced repeated concerns over pricing, passenger safety and the quality of services.

The latest reforms are intended to strengthen transparency and safety while making licensed taxis easier for passengers to identify.
