Finland Plans New Emergency Alert System Before Year-End

Finland is preparing to introduce a new nationwide emergency alert system before the end of 2026, according to a spokesperson for the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.

The new system will use cell broadcast technology to deliver emergency warnings directly to mobile phones. Unlike app-based alert services, users will not need to download or install a separate application to receive the messages.

Cell broadcast allows authorities to send alerts to mobile devices within a specific geographical area. This means warnings can be targeted at people who are potentially affected by an emergency, such as severe weather, major accidents or other situations requiring immediate public attention.

The technology is already used in several countries as part of national public warning systems.

Finnish authorities are working to make the new service available before the end of the year. Once implemented, it is expected to provide an additional channel for delivering urgent safety information to people across Finland.
