Finland to Send Liaison Officers to Greenland as Part of Danish-Led NATO Training Effort

Finland will send two liaison officers to Greenland at Denmark’s request to assess opportunities for future military training activities, the Finnish Ministry of Defence said.

The deployment follows a joint decision by the Greenlandic government and Denmark’s Ministry of Defence to continue and further develop Danish Armed Forces training operations in Greenland. The training framework will be carried out in close cooperation with NATO allies.

According to the ministry, Finland’s participation through liaison officers is aimed at gaining a clearer understanding of operating conditions in the Arctic environment and identifying potential areas for cooperation within the broader NATO training structure. The officers will not take part in combat activities but will focus on coordination, information sharing, and planning.

The move reflects Finland’s growing role within NATO and its interest in strengthening defence cooperation in the High North, a region of increasing strategic importance due to security and climate-related factors.

Denmark has in recent years placed greater emphasis on defence readiness in Greenland, citing the need for improved situational awareness and allied cooperation in the Arctic. Finland’s involvement adds to that allied presence, reinforcing coordination among NATO partners operating in the region.
